Olympus Begins to Fall

(This entry has long brewed in the back of my mind since first reading about the scandals in Olympus corporate. I just need to get it out even if it is a month or so behind the times.)

I've pretty much been an Oly user for most of my online digital photography life (save for the brief stint with the Aiptek pencam and the Canon G3). I'm a fan of the small format. I'd like to embelish some more, but the truth is it was mostly opportunity that brought the Olympus brand into my life.

The hot-shoe-having C5000Z and the underwater scuba housing that we got at sale price gave me the chance to go digital seriously with my personal photography and at the same time give me digital access to the beauty of life under water. The C5000Z served me well, but my desire for more pixel power and DSLR-like looks and functionality came calling to me in the form of the C8080WZ.
The C8080 was robust, looked a lot like a DSLR, had the hot shoe that I knew I couldn't live without, but also gave you the ability to shoot video. It was one of those models that also allowed you to use two storage media: the XD format which earlier Oly cams took as their staple, and Compact Flash. It gave me more range and control than the C5000Z ever could, but still wasn't quite fast enough to capture those oh so spontaneous fleeting moments in any potential photo-op lost between half-press focus and actual exposure. That meant I needed a DSLR. So I said goodbye to the C8080, and open my life to a pre-loved E-410.
Though it may have been the first Oly I'd purchased pre-loved, I never-the-less showed it the love and respect that it deserved, and it has loved me back. It serves me well to this day. Not to say that I wouldn't trade up if opportunity came a knocking, but recent developments in the world of photography specific to the brand that has brought me the above mentioned tools has got me wondering... with all this hullabaloo about the corruption and chaos in Olympus' corporate structure, is it still a good idea to stand atop this mountain when it seems that it will crumble in the near future?

When or if it will fall is anyone's guess. Whether the damage that the executives of Olympus has wrought will have any lasting effect on the product line and its legacy as a whole is not yet clear at this point. For the moment I will stick with the guns that I have and love, and if I can eventually get my hands on a bazooka (the E3 or the E5), then I might be one of those stubborn enough to stick with the ship until it sinks.

Year-end Reflections (part1?)

No literal reflections here. At least none photographed.

I'm writing this on the fly, more of a reaction to David Hobby's latest post reflecting about his year on Strobist.com, and to some of his top ten posts of the year, in particular the10th. That particular post talks about Imitation being a path to Innovation, which begins with a reference to Picasso, goes on highlighting the work of one Justin Lanier, who doesn't seem to have his own website yet so you can check his work on on his flicker. It got me thinking... what exactly have I done this year with my personal photography?

I have to say, personal photography-wise, it's been a quiet 2011. I didn't get to pursue a lot of my personal projects started way back when,but then again what's new? But now that I think about it...

1) I was able to do an entry for the Motorcycle diaries / monument personal project.
2) I got new gear in the form of the DIY ringflash...
3) ... which I used in my night-club escapades with my good friend, and cousin, Angelo.
4) One of my closest friends asked me to do a Prenup shoot for her, which I was gladly able to pull off, guerrilla style. Unfortunately no blogged or published photos from this set before their wedding. I figure since it's been awhile so I can probably post some soon, hopefully before the year ends.

Aside from some parties and those above, and a couple of photography advancement related entries, it's been a quiet year for me.

I intend to change that for 2012 however. :)

Lytro has arrived!

Quick post before rushing off to work.

LYTRO is here! By "here" I mean upon us.

I came across it last night while going through the headlines of my preferred feeds. I saw the announcement on dpreview. Check it out!

It's by no means in any form reminiscent of your regular camera. Then again, it pretty much does nothing like any consumer camera out there anyway.

Since the technology allows you to shoot first and ~~ask questions~~ focus later, the shutter is instant. With a constant aperture of f2 through out the zoom range (35-280mm equivalent), it will rule low light situations too. Interface is simple, with just a power button, shutter button, and zoom to worry about. Viewing the pictures and focusing is as easy as swipe and point.

The camera has an internal, consumer-non-replaceable battery, and internal storage available in two sizes: 8GB (Graphite and Electric Blue) which allows for 350 11 "megaray" shots and 16 GB (Red-Hot) which gives you 750 pictures. While not available on current release, the technology will enable 3D viewing of photos taken on the camera once they finish writing the program some time next year.

Did you reserve one when they hyped it up before? :) I did. But it'll take a bit of time to come up with the $399 for the 8GB model (or $499 for the 16GB). Christmas wish list plus 1!

I've checked out the site and tried going through steps to buy (since I've reserved one). It appears that they don't have the ability to ship international as of yet. Only available in the continental US it seems. And shipping date is by March - April of 2012.

That's a looooooooooooooong wait. Oh well. :) Wait, we shall.

OT Post: Money Money Money

Good day dear readers (are there any of you still out there?). It's been a month since my last post, and I haven't been quite as active, photographically speaking, outside my work as of late. Nothing much to blog about, at least not photography related. I try to reserve this blog just for my photography and anything related to it, but indulge me this random entry.

I've been thinking lot about other options for making a little more cash on the side. We have to face facts. :) As much fun as living life day to day is, and going to clubs and being a lensman there, we're all getting older.

I was wondering about putting together a photobooth. Something I could rent out, for small events and the like. It's been getting pretty popular as of late. All the weddings I've gone to has had them in one form or another. By the way, if anyone has contacts or ideas on how to start one, I'd love to here from you.
So far the little bit of research I've done requires some investment, in hardware and software. I wonder if there's a way to open source a photobooth set-up.

I've also tried my hand at stock photography. So far I've only got a couple shots uploaded on istock, and they haven't quite earned me enough to be able to withdraw the sales from there. Hmmm. I should seriously take a second look at this avenue of extra income.

A couple of years ago I got a booklet on invest stocks. Heaven knows where it is now. I haven't considered this avenue much, as I've nearly zero knowledge about it. I've stumbled upon an interesting site though, which would give any one top penny stock picks. Customer reviews seem promising, though I find myself apprehensive, since this will take some time and maybe more knowledge investment than I think I am willing to allow myself, but who knows? This might be another way to go.

Then there's the lottery. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Light Field Photography: Lytro

I came across this camera / concept / idea / future-of-memory-in-picture-capturing-as-we-know-it a couple of weeks ago when my brother posted it on his plurk timeline. I've been meaning to write about it for awhile but, as always, life has a way of getting in the way.

Ok, for now there is no commercially available camera. But you can reserve yourself one. Just some sample photos in their gallery, several updates on their blog, and links hyping-up and explaining the science behind the concept, behind Lytro.

The site talks about how the camera is able to capture the "light field" which is a record of the amount of light that's bouncing off everything in the picture in every derection, how intense the light is, color etc... and gives you the ability to shoot first and focus later. Imagine that. Truly idiot proof.

When this technology will actually be available for the average person is anyone's guess. For now only lucky testers have been given access to the tech and their photos have been populating the gallery. Check them out.

The skeptic in me is saying "these photos could just be a composite of two photos shot in quick succession with two different focus points" and "could just be a super duper small aperture opening shot". Perhaps. The part of me that's hoping for something that can actually do all this in something that fits inside your shirt pocket is putting his fingers in his ears and going "nanananananana".

Here's hoping for the best. Good luck to the people at Lytro. Please let me know when my camera's ready. Thanks.

Bending Light 3: DIY photography Ringflash in action

Good evening all. Those who've read my previous entries are familiar with the ringflash adapter I recently bought off of DIY lighting kits. I've been able to test it out on a select few of my friends. One would imagine, due to its bulky-yet-flimsy build, and the fact that the DSLR that I currently use as my workhorse isn't quite as capable in the dark, that use of the ringflash might be relegated to home-studio use, or the rare fun with friends portrait shoot. However, the fun-loving risk-taker in me just couldn't be stopped I guess. I decided to test it out on some club-goers. I had to change my set-up a bit though.

Instead of using the Olympus E410, I opted to use a Canon G10, which solves my focus-hunting-in-the-dark problem, and whose hotshoe would still allow me to trigger the flash with the use of my PT-04.
I swapped the FL36R with the YN-560, giving me a faster recycle time and more power. However, the bigger 560 wouldn't fit in the hole as it was, so I did what some users suggested in the Strobist article comment thread and cut some slits in the corners.
Instead of tiny and bulky tripod, I opted to go with a Gorrillapod knock-off from CDR King. This helped make the set-up more rigid, supporting the flash and giving me a better grip on the set-up, not to mention more mobility than the tripod would otherwise allow.

It's still, by no means, compact. But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

Some things I've come to learn from this experiment:

The ringflash isn't advisable for group photos. Usable, for sure, but not advisable. You tend to burn the people on the sides of the photos.
Big and Bulky have their bonuses. Everyone was curious to see just what this new fangled camera-whatchamacallit does and how they would look in the light. Easier to get people to agree to getting shot.

(Semi) Hardware and Ringflash Update: DIY Ringlfash arrived and assembled!

The notice came in the mail this morning! When I noticed it, my mind went blank. Forget that I have work in an hour. I went straight to the post office on the wave to pick up the parcel, with backpack in tow for transport. The size of the package surprised me (that's what she said) though. The stiff flat box, marked "DO NOT BEND" was maybe 2 A3s side by side. Plus I didn't have to pay the regular tax that Philpost usually charges me for may online shopping orders. Sweet!

Rode home as quick and carefully as I could to avoid bending the box or damaging it in transit. Opened it up, took a couple of photos for posterity, and left it lying on the bed for me to put together once I got home.

Once home, I set to work (after dinner of course) and followed the instructions step by step, lest i mess something up. I wasn't as clean as I thought I'd be though, but what the heck. :) Here it is all put together.

Took some time out to decide how to mount the flash bracket, or rather how to bend it as the instructions only had provisions for Canon and Nikon cameras, so I went with the midrange Canon choice. Sample photos of family members...

I mounted the ringflash on my camera using the bracket and a spare tripod plate. It makes for a bulky piece of equipment though. I triggered the set-up with a PT-04, though I've just bought a TT:L cable via eBay which will make the whole experience a little more convenient and idiot proof. :)

May Month Update: Jace's photography outside of work

Good morning all. While waiting for the ringflash I ordered from DIY photography to arrive, might as well write about more of the things this blog was meant for, i.e. my experience of life with photography.

First, I was asked by one of my closest friends to cover the recital of a couple of summer workshops she and her friends from Make Believe have been holding, one at the Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street, and the others (as they are 3 workshops presented in one venue) at Maria Montessori in Merville park. While I believe I'm a professional photographer, I really feel like I have a ways to go when it comes to covering events. I know I could've done better, light-wise, in both instances, certain situational constraints (available light sources - both mine and at venue, technical difficulties etc.) couldn't be helped. All in all though I think I did pretty good. I'd post some photos on the blog but I don't have model releases of the kids.

Straying back to the ring light a bit, I'm excited! The Sunday after I made my purchase, I got an email from the DIYP saying that the item's been shipped! That was 9 days ago. I hope to have it soon!!! I think it will excite me enough to keep toting the e410 and FL-36 around all the time! Though I ought to buy a TTL cable soon... I wonder if a canon cable would work.

Yesterday morning I read a burger challenge entitled Battle Burger on juice.ph this morning which drove me to take the wave and ride to SM North Annex to try one of those juicy burgers out (ok I had less self-serving - and fattening - motives, of course, but let's just say the burger was one of my goals for the day). Panelists for this best burger in the burg reviewed 27 different burgers from everywhere in the greater manila area (though for their Army Navy burger they opted to go all the way to Tagaytay). Number 17 on the list was Bigger Better Burger's Shitake Teriyaki half-pounder, and since I was in the area, and was craving, I bought myself one for 152 pesos. I opted not to clutter my palette with anything else so no fries or iced-tea for me.

I hadn't really planned on taking many photos on this trip out so I didn't bring a camera... or rather I brought one, but it turns out that the battery on the C5000Z is getting too old to hold charge for too long. I opted to use my Samsung Galaxy 5 and the Retrocam application. Decent enough pics I think.

The bun was pandesal, the burger was juicy, the sauce was sweet and the shitake was succulent. Worth every peso. Promise. My curiosity's piqued by some of the other burgers though, so I might make the trip to some of those other establishments, though I'm almost sure to avoid the priciest ones.

DIY Ringlfash 2: buy and build it yourself from DIY Lighting kits / DIY Photography

Nearly a month after I posted an entry on a very work-intensive ring light, David Hobby (of strobist) comes out with another article featuring a more budget-minded-willing-to-spend-slacker-friendly DIY Ring Flash kit. And man does it look sharp (pun intended)!

For 25$ plus 8$ shipping, you can get your hands on this effective-looking device made out of vinyl (and whatever reflective material that seems to be), bend, fold, snap and tape it together and have a clearly usable ring flash. For an additional 7.95$ (plus 0.50$ shipping), you can order the flash bracket, that attaches via a slot on the ring flash assembly and mounts the flash via rubber bands. How you trigger the flash is up to you. While I imagine that PT-04s would be enough, I think I'd spring for a TTL cable this time.

It's by no means as professional looking as the one I previously blogged about nor is it as pricey as the Orbis ring flash, but it sure looks nice and is cheap to boot. Upon reading the entry, I clicked through to the website and ordered myself a ring flash and bracket. When it arrives, you bet I'm going to post output. Talk about an impulse buy. Buyers remorse? As of this writing, none yet.

Helpful Hints: DIY Ring Flash

Haven't been blogging here as of late. And I haven't exactly been putting out anything of my own photography (un-work-related anyway) either. However I stumbled upon something interesting on Strobist, one of my regular reads (which I recommend to anyone and everyone). I've seen a couple of different DIY ring lights / beauty dishes, and I've tried making at least one, but this seems to be the best looking (and possibly most work intensive) one yet.

If you've already seen it, you understand why I feel like I HAVE to make one, versus shelling out a pretty penny buying something like the Orbis Ring Flash. If I wanted to be extremely cheap, I could possibly make a paper ringflash (via diyphotography.net), but I'm not sure how long that would last.

Hmmm. I don't have access to those exact tools so I wonder how I'd make one for myself, but time will tell (if I ever get started on it that is).

PP: Tuesday Motorcycle Diary >> Monuments / Parks: QC Memorial Circle Dusk-Early Evening

Ok. That was a long title for a post. But basically you get the gist. After going there one night to jog and taking lo-fi photos using my phone, I decided to try and visit on my day off, to continue my Tuesday Motorcycle Diary plus Parks / Monuments / Significant public places personal project. I didn't go there early enough to take a tour and take photos using the afternoon light, but I've seen enough to know that I'm pretty sure I'm going back there again for a part two / 3.

Arrived at roughly 5pm. Paid the entrance / parking fee (5 pesos for motorcycle). Took a slow tour around the park's inner road using the wave, and found out that there's this huge playground called The Circle of Joy, and amusement park (which seemed, sadly, closed). Also found where you could rent bikes like they used to do. They actually have some sort of a garage for them. Photos next time though.

Decided to park and grab an icecream at this establishment...

I got the Queso Queso (18 pesos)

As the sun had begun going to bed, I walked to point where I could see both the fountain and the Quezon Memorial shrine and started taking photos there.

A bunch of kids decided to chat me up and take a look at the LCD of my camera while I was taking photos, at times running in front of the lens to get into the shot. I indulged them in a couple of frames.

Finally, took some long exposure shots.

Mostly took shots of the light show. As you can see the monument is lit up with what I can only assume to be HID LEDs, changing color every so often. The fountain's water works are supposed to correspond to the music that's played in that area as well.

Notes for those who want to visit:

It gets pretty cold and windy this time of year so bring a jacket.
~~The park is closed from 12 to 4pm. Which makes sense. Who wants to walk around in lunch time heat anyway?~~ (My Mistake. It's closed from 12mn to 4am. Goofy me.)
There are restaurants in the area, namely Max's, Chicken Inasal, Tropical Hut and New Kamameshi House. There are other stalls that sell food and other items in the loop leading from where the restaurants are though.

Its been ages since i'd last been to the memorial circle. Inspired by my cardio trainer app, and bored with just walking up and down our street for exercise, i decided to go visit one of the of the most prominent parks in the city. I took a few photos too but with my phone so i won't promise quality.

Hmmmm. Using bloggerdroid for this entry so i'm not sure how i'm gonna add the photos. Oh well.

One of my past entries talked about starting your own personal photography projects. One of those for me was visiting and documenting our country's parks. I didn't take enough photos or do much in the way of planning or prep so this is going to just be a preview of what is to come. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna make this a weekly thing.

Hot and Heavy Techlust UPDATE: Olympus E5

I was walking around the mall today after work (forgetting to do what I needed to, which was do actual shopping VS window shopping) when I happened across the Olympus promo booth in the 5th level of SM Annex. It seems like the newest in the E series of camera bodies has recently been launched. It's chunky, it's solid, and let me tell you, it's what I want! True, I said the same about the E3 way back when (about 2 years ago), but when technology moves forward, your tech-lust must move along with it.

I've only just read the preview at dpreview.com, and while the E-5 isn't leaps and bounds different than its predecessor, like the E-3 was with the E-1, it's a sensible enough upgrade. Key differences include a newer sensor (12.3MP vs. 10MP), a wider flip and swivel rear LCD, SD card storage instead of the harder to find XD, and movie mode (720p 30fps). You could say they took the advancements and changes that they made in the lower end models and applied it to the leader of the pack.

I want one. Anyone who loves me more than life itself can get me one of those for 85k pesosesoses, body only. However, if the E-3 suffers a drop in price because of its newer brother, I'd be happy with that too. Hahahahaha.
The unit that they had for folks to handle had a 50-200 lens attached to it. I was surprised with the quality and the fact that it had an SD card instead of the usual Olympus XD option. I thought that the image quality was a bit dirty, and attributed it to the smudgy lens. When they demoed the video mode for me, I was like "why is it choppy?" but through my fiddling I discovered that the soft-focus quality and choppy vid was due to the art filters feature it has (a feature they took from the E-620 if I remember correctly). Art mode off, the video was decent.

I WANT ONE.

Hardware Update plus Store Name-drop: Yong Nuo 560 via Tay Hua Trading

It's arrived! It's here!

I ordered a YN-560 from Tay Hua trading corporation the other day. Used their order form, paid through the bank in the morning, then they shipped it same day. It arrived Friday afternoon.

Some back-story for the interested:

I've fiddled with Yong Nuo flashes before, though mostly with YN-462 (which is a fully manual guess-what-intensity-I'm-on kind of flash) which I either bought for my friends, or for myself which I eventually sold to friends and/or relatives.While the YN-462 basically satisfies a person's need for off-camera lighting, it's lack of zooming capability, and the guesswork nature of its intensity input leaves much to be desired. I personally think it gives you bang for the buck though.

Having sold all of my YN-462s, and being stuck with a burnt out Sunpak and a vivitar with a broken shoe, lighting-wise I was left with my FL-36R. A flash is a flash is a flash mind you, but I'd rather that I keep the TTL-capable flash close at hand instead of mounted on a stand where I can't use said capability (since I'm using PT-04 flash triggers). Earlier this week though I decided to give myself an early Christmas present and order me a new, more powerful flash. Here's where the YN-560 comes in.

David Hobby, the man behind Strobist, was able to do a semi-review of the YN-560 in comparison to the LumoPro LP-160 (which, to the best of my knowledge, is not available in the Philippines, and is easily twice as expensive). Unfortunately the unit he was given had two faults: broken zoom motor and no ready-beep. Mine, however, have both working. :) Sorry Dave.

Not only that, the folks at Tay Hua also packaged it with a set of 5 diffusers of different colors, where the usual package from Yong Nuo for their other flashes only has one.

I've tested it a couple of times, on the camera and with the PT-04. Seems to be working. Beeps and Zooms and everything. I'm excited to put it to work. And it looks and feels professional. Hahaha.

You can get one from either of 3 sources in the Philippines that I know of: Tay Hua, Filters Exchange on multiply, or The Echo Store. I opted for Tay Hua because I'm a repeat customer of theirs, and while they're the most expensive of the three (4000 VS. Filters Exchange is currently on sale and selling theirs for 3,500, and I've only just found out that The Echo Store is selling theirs for 3,900), Tay Hua is offering 6 months warranty, VS Filter Exchange's 1 month, and I have no idea if The Echo Store will honor any.

Also didn't think 4000 was too big of a deal because if you buy it direct from the manufacturer from ebay, they sell at roughly the same price, though with a 1 year warranty, however if you happen to get a lemon like Dave did, you'll have to send it back to HongKong.

Total damage: 4000 pesos for the unit, 250 php for shipping via LBC.

EXCITED to put it to good use.

More Lights, MORE POWER! > Dave Black and his 8 SB-900s

I've previously written about some sites that I wish I authored, or sites that I feel are great resources for anyone who's into photography. I try to regularly read the entries. While I tend to gloss over some entries because they may not apply to me or my situation or my preferred line of photography, I try to glean as much info as I can and apply them, when possible, to my photographic life.

I was reading through Strobist's Monday entry and I was blown away by the videos of this guy, Dave Black, who's using 8 sets of SB-900s, an SU-800 commander, one RadioPopper transmitter, two receivers, two FourSquares and two sets of Michael Bass fiber optic bundles (it'll be the first time I've encountered all of the names of those things save the SB-900s so I won't blame you for thinking "HUH??"). He uses those 8 speedlights as fill lights for action shots at distance. WOW. You can read the actual article, entitled "Hangin' Eight, with David Black" or watch the video below.

All I can say is WOW. And where the heck can I get a FourSquare and everything else??

Bar Photography: Dong Abay at Votre

My cousin and I met up last night. Checked out Votre, this bar at the corner of Sergeant Esguerra and Eugenio Lopez. They were featuring Dong Abay last night. Was able to catch him and Coffeebreak Island, the band that opened and backed him, perform several new songs as well as some Yano classics. He sang "Perpekto", "Senti", "Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo" and "Kamusta Na".

I gotta say I'm not a big fan, or at least I never took the time or made the effort to follow him or his bands, but there's just something about a live performance that really gets you, viscerally.

Was armed with my e410, and 28mm manual OM lens. Due to the spectacular lighting at the venue, I opted to go up to ASA 1600, making my shots grainy. Eventually I opted for pop-up flash use since I didn't bother to bring my hot shoe flash, but then better for you to be able to see what I heard yeah?

Hi folks, I know I haven't been posting much of anything lately. My bad. I should really get back on the horse. But not right now at least.

This pseudo post would like to disguise itself as an example of how much fun someone can have with a couple of bits of headgear, a camera, a plain background, a very steady-handed friend (or camera on tripod with remote), and almost any photo editing software you might have available (downloaded a freeware gif maker for this exercise). But really, it's just me making faces with different, um, things on my head. Enjoy!

Travel + Food Photography: My Gustatory Life in KL

I promised a friend I'd blog about the food I encountered while I was away, and to try and tell her what's in each dish. Honestly though I don't think I'll be much help with deciphering the ingredients or how they were prepared, and I wasn't exactly comfortable with taking my camera out at the local Mamak stall, but I've taken photos of some of what I ate, some of which were my own preparation. Basically this is a peek at what I was eating while in KL. Click to enlarge photos.

On one of my first evenings in KL, Michelle and Reza took me out for dinner at one of the Chinese restaurants close to the condo. I forget the name, but we had the following.

I realize that, save for the chilli pork, we repeated that meal in Petaling Street.

My first Friday in KL involved being at work early for a staff meeting, though my shift was from 2 to 10 that night. I had some time to explore the mall and that I did, wandering into the Arena food court under Jusco, LG level. Looked around and ordered Dried Pan Mee from Penang Noodle and Lam Mee. Just on impulse. 5.25 RM.

My first real meal in KL was at around 130 to 2 AM. Kim had picked me up from KL Sentral and offered to buy me a meal. We promptly drove to one of the Mamak stalls close to the condo and had my first Nasi Lemak Ayam. However I didn't take photos then. Eventually though I ordered it again in several different locations, and purchased a couple of take-away ones from Jusco. The photos here are of the Nasi Lemak Biasa from Jusco. It's fattening rice (basically rice cooked in or with coconut milk), chili paste, with egg, peanuts and fish. I also ordered Nasi Goreng, though I have no pics of that though. Fail.

Also bought Sambal Mee Goreng from Jusco just to make it a bigger meal. All carbs, I know.

I know I could opt to eat at any of the Mamak stalls walking distance away, makes for a hot meal and all that. I guess the fact that this would cost less (there's a 20-30% discount for these things after 7pm, La Boheme), and that I wouldn't have to walk to and back from the stalls made it a more obvious choice.

One of the perks / challenges of living alone is preparing your food yourself. Due to the state of certain appliances at my host's pad, I made do with what I had. One of the things that I actually managed to cook was pasta using the rice cooker. Only took photos of my first try, successfully done without mess. I bought some fish snacks from 711 for my protein, that's why that's in the photo. I mixed it in with the pasta.
My successive ones also involved a white sauce made from cream of mushroom soup, mixed with squeezy cheese. :P

The evening after my pasta adventure, some of the girls took me to SS2 for my first Lok lok experience. The set-up is basically that there is a rack, well, a van in this case, with several different kinds of foodstuffs on skewer, with different prices, on ice on each side of the van. Each side of said van also has 2 vats of boiling water or Tom Yam for you to stick your skewer of choice into to cook. You get a little box in which to combine your choice of sauces (mild, medium spicy, spicy spicy) to dip your foodstuff in. At the end of your meal, based on the color and number of sticks, proprietor will charge you accordingly.

*Lok Lok side note. Every Monday in 1Utama, there is a stall in the LG level called Lok Lok Fun that offers eat all you can for 11.95 RM. I made it a point to go there for lunch on one of those days. Eeleen accompanied me. :) Sulit.

I'm not sure where Bubbletea originated, but I'd seen a store dedicated to it in SM Megamall before, but we had it so it counts. After the Loklok, we went and had Bubbletea a block away. Just a few pics of me and Jo.

The one time I actually took a photo of what I ate at the Mamak Corner under the bridge was when I ordered Kuay Teow Goreng. It's basically flat noodles cooked goreng style, which is to say pan fried with a bit of soy sauce (is my guess) and peppers and vegetables.

One of the last things I did on one of my last off days (third of three) in KL was go to Chinatown, where we walked around, checking stuff out. Mostly though, it kinda reminded me of Greenhills. Had Air Mata Kucing, and Tiger beer while we had dinner.

On the way out Inga treated us to Apam Balik, a local dessert which is like a peanut paste pancake sandwich.

There you have it folks. My gustatory adventure in Kuala Lumpur. I'm sure there are other things that I wasn't able to explore or eat. That will have to wait until next time. :)

First off, I'd like to apologize to those who actually read my blog and visit it from time to time to check on where I've gotten to on two wheels. A lot has happened since my last Motorcycle Photo Diary entry that has led to me making the most of my off-days but not necessarily on the Honda Wave. Sorry for that.

Trying out a new layout courtesy of blogger's new Design tab. If anyone reads this, leave a comment in the comment section (on the actual blog preferably and in the facebook cross-post). Picture window, the theme is called. I'll think about how long I'm going to keep it that way.

For those of you who don't already know, I've spent the last two weeks of July in KL, on a semi-vacation, slash (yes I typed it out as a word) experiencing the TPC-KL lifestyle, meeting new friends, eating new food (photos in a blog entry to follow), going places and getting lost commuting around the city.
Spent the first day off doing a half day city tour. Photos available as an album on my FB here, but for those who don't have access to that, they can check out the photos via my photobin (see previous entry) album. The arrangement's pretty funky, considering I rearranged it, but it'll give you cooliris-like usability. Click album, or here. Here are some of the highlights of the trip...

The packaging says it can take 3kg, but I'm sure the E410, lens et al weighs less than that. While it looks like the Joby SLR-Zoom gorillapod, and it's supposedly rated with the same weight-bearing capability, I got this one from CDR King. The Joby SLR-Zoom would cost you 49.95 Euros, but this one only cost me 280 Php.

On a not so totally unrelated note, the monopod with suction-cup that bought in my trip to Pampanga broke. I think I pulled too hard on it while it was attached to the windshield of my car. My bad. This one more than makes up for that though.

So there you have it folks. A little bit of traveling photography and a little bit of useful tripod tech put in. I'll be making a few more entries in the following days. :) Spread it all out I guess. For now though I shall sleep. :)

Online photo archiving / sharing as a concept isn't exactly a new one. Some double as an online link source, others as galleries, and what have you. Others tell you that they'll let you upload as much as you can for free, but will only let you and others have access to your most recent uploads. There are always limits after all.

One of the few ways you can avoid that is actually pay for the service. Photobin offers that, among other services.
   Their Photo Sharing service helps you create galleries with your hi-res files and show them off in a 3d wall style, very much like the Cooliris plug-in lets you do, but these galleries will have unique URLs and will feature your photos and yours alone. No ads.
   Have you got loads of old prints from long ago? No scanner at home? They've got a Photo Scanning service as well. Send them your prints, they'll scan them and upload them for you.
   Is someone you love celebrating a birthday soon? Have you got an embarrassing photo of them somewhere on you? Perhaps you'd like to give them some sort of Photo Gift to commemorate their turning a year older for all eternity? They've got that too. Turn your photos into mugs, totes, puzzles, mousepads, aprons, shirts and other meaningful gifts.

Don't take my word for it though. Try it out yourself. I'm going to see what it can do. There is a free trial after all.

PP: Tuesday Motorcycle Diary >> Further North

Despite today's early precipitation, I was determined to get back on two wheels, having taken a week off. The week before I did have an adventurous Tuesday, though that was done on 4 wheels. I decided to retrace my steps / tracks on two. Took maybe twice the time, seeing as I had to take McArthur instead of the NLEX but it wasn't that bad.

Given the weather, and the fact that friends in the city, who were in the south, were telling me not to venture down there because of slick roads, I decided to go North. Trip took me through Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, Guiguinto, Plaridel, Balagtas, and Pulilan. Didn't stop to take photos of all that though. I should one of these days.

Had to stop by the post office first though. :) picked up my new toy... or rather a replacement for something that was part of my original arsenal. My test shots in the field didn't turn out too well so took some shots using it and of it.

I apologize for not being able to be as regular as I'd want to be with regard to updating the blog and with the Tuesday Motorcycle photo diary. Life happened. Work happened. Oh well.

I was, however, able to ride this Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

I accompanied my brother to get PNP clearance for his XRM. Didn't take photos there though. It was actually pretty hot, out. A pain to ride around specially mid day.
Afterwards I wound up going to the (Picture Company) Podium store, which I once called home, to do some stuff for work. Helped me cool off too. Then made my way to SM North Annex, where I now stay during office hours. While I spent part of the off day partially working, I was still able to treat myself to a good hearty meal at Army Navy, and a different route home.

On a friend's recommendation, and in search of a good burger, I tried eating at the Army Navy Burger and Burrito place in the Skygarden of SM North Edsa. Ordered myself a double burger, with additional cheese and bacon, plus an order of fries with cheese dip, and a large iced tea. All in all, a good meal to be sure. I've never really even taken it via 4 wheels, I wanted to try it out on two. Passed through Mindanao avenue, and basically just followed the road and the flow of traffic.

Elections May 10, 2010: God Help Us All

I didn't intend today to be a particularly photo intensive day. Honestly, I know I was lax in the past week (with regard to the Motorcycle Photo diary thing, give me a break! I had to work on my off day), and I haven't exactly been able to make up for that = no off since, well, April.

Today though marks another turning point in history, you might put it. Electronic polling machines were introduced to the polling process. You basically followed the same steps I put down in a previous election entry. The only difference being your ballots get scanned by the Picos Machine, which basically allows for a quicker tabulation of votes. No photos were allowed within the polling stations however.

The experience was quite long and hot. Considering we got there at 7:45 AM, we wound up leaving the place at 9:30 or so. Most of that time was spent waiting in line under the hot sun. Voting itself took about maybe 5 to 10 minutes max.

PP: Tuesday Motorcycle Diary >> Where the road took me: Marcelo H. Del Pilar Shrine

This afternoon's trip was, perhaps, by far the free-est ride I've done on a Tuesday. There was no plan, there was no destination, just the road, my ride, my camera and me. Granted it would've been a longer ride if I'd left early, but I constrained myself to the few hours in the mid afternoon til evening because of the fact that I just didn't want to spend the day dehydrated, under the relentless sun and sweltering heat.

I decided that, since most of the places I went to were in the south, to try exploring northward. Spurred on by several rider's quotes I found online (specifically this one: Young riders pick a destination and go.. Old riders pick a direction and go), I did just that. I rode until I found some signs pointing to places I've never been. I found myself in Bocaue, then in Balagtas, and finally at Marcelo H. Del Pilar's shrine.

After tentatively going around the first floor of the empty (of people) museum, and electing not to check out the library (aklatan) upstairs, I decided to walk about outside and take photos of the statue and what have you. After which I made my way home, but decided to get a haircut from an "exotic barber" -- in this case, I mean it as just a stranger.

Ok, again it was mostly about the ride than any photos. Decided to pack the c-5000z instead of the e410 because I knew the ride was going to be tough. Besides which I didn't want to pack too much weight as I knew I was going to be adding weight to the bike when I got there (choco milk from the Philippine Carabao Center).

Suffice it to say that I left at 8AM, got to UPLB at roughly 11:45 AM, in the heat of the morning sun, and boy was it hot. The trip was dehydrating and suffocating, what with all the smoke all this riding is exposing me to, but enjoyable too. All those banking turns up and down the mountain (taken at safe speeds of course). The trip back was faster and, in a way, more fun since I was riding with my brother. Just a couple of photos.

I took a similar shot when i brought the xrm up to LB. Just thought I'd take one for the wave.

PP: Tuesday Motorcycle Diary >> SPLASH ISLAND

The 2nd entry into this Tuesday Motorcycle Diary is my "epic" solo trip to Splash Island!

Ok, first off I'm happy I even got there. Hahaha. Secondly, I realize that it would've been more fun if I weren't alone. :) Having said that, I also add a disclaimer: I don't think any of this particular trip's photos is artsy-fartsy or even decently pretty. Most of, if any at all, of the photos and video that I shot is basically a sort-of retelling of the experience. And, let's face it, I only made up this personal project to give me an excuse to ride ride ride. :D Due to distance considerations and the fact that I was going to get wet, I opted to bring the Olympus C-5000z with me, together with the underwater casing. Trip summary:

Departed at 12pm, traveled 65 odd KMs, arrived at roughly 2:45pm. Parking was 40 php, paid 400 for entrance, rented 2 lockers for my stuff (100 pesos), ate 90 pesos worth of park-approved food, lost 10 pesos in one of the rides (coins slipped out of my pocket). Went to as many of the attractions as I could, and rode them more than once if possible. Did NOT pee in any of the pools. Left at around 5:15, took some photos on the way home of interesting stuff (which you will see posted soon), and suffered through so much muffler smoke on the way home. Took a rest stop at fort to catch my breath and rode straight afterward. Arrived at home at 8:45 PM.

Learnings:

1.) Leave earlier. -- I could've but I was wary of the dark sky looming in the direction of the south.

2.) Pack lighter. -- as it was I brought a couple of things I wound up not needing.

3.) Bring a friend. -- it's not as fun alone as it is with others.

4.) I CAN DO IT!!! Hahaha!

Personal Project: A Tuesday Motorcycle Photo-Diary

As most of you might know, I like to ride my bicycle, I like to ride my bike... :)

My Honda Wave 125

Well, motorcycle anyway. I love the freedom that the meeting of two wheels and a road provides. It offers me an economical mode of transportation and a rush at the same time. For weeks now I've been trying to think of a way to marry this passion for riding with the passion for photography that this blog is dedicated to (come to think of it, much like Clay Enos does when he's on the road with his Vespa).

I've been toying around with the idea of taking my days off and going on the road to places I've never been to or at least been to rarely, or maybe even haven't been to in a long time, and taking photos there. Anything and anywhere really, just to get my on the road to some place.

Lately though, such an undertaking has been impeded by the many errands I am periodically tasked to perform, not to mention the heat that this summer is gifting the world with. Yesterday however, I decided that, even though half the day was gone and the summer sun was pounding the afternoon with near unbearable heat, I would still go out on two wheels and see how far I could go and what pictures I would take.

Initially, I wasn't going to go very far. My first stop was at a cousin's gym to pop in and say hello. Sadly he wasn't there, and no photos were taken. I hope to remedy this soon.

My 2nd stop was for a massage (I thought I deserved one after all). You betcha by golly no photos were taken there.

I tried to catch the sunset at the Mall of Asia but I had so much fun trying to find the right spot to stop at, I missed it when I finally parked. Here are a couple of the photos I snapped anyway when I got there.

Not a bad showing when you think about it, but since I was keen on taking sunset photos, it still doesn't meet my expectations for myself.

A couple of key learnings though:

1.) pack the right lens. -- I actually didn't have any real plans as to where I was going so I decided to just pack light, and brought the E410 and the 28mm manual OM lens. Could've brought the 50mm though. Will do so next time.

2.) plan ahead. -- this always helps.

3.) bring more water. -- one bottle isn't quite enough.

4.) keep shooting. -- just like Clay says (and he's fast becoming a more influential inspiration for my photo-blogging life) "Make pictures, don't get hung up on how nice they are."

So there you are folks. I am committing to yet another personal project. I've a feeling though that this will have more mileage than any of the others (pun intended). I might just use this as an excuse to visit the many (?) national parks that we have that I once thought I might do for a personal photo project.

Techlust: Noktor Hyperprime 50mm f/0.95 lens... I WANT

Let's dispense with the normal "Hi everyone, I know I haven't been writing in awhile" greetings and get down to the meat of this entry yeah?

Meet the NOKTOR Hyperprime 50mm f/0.95 lens. I WANT ONE!

Probably one of the fastest lenses on the market today, Noktor's newest (and first) product opens up at an f-stop of 0.95. [The fastest lens I've ever owned is an Olympus OM 50mm with a max aperture of 1.8. But since it's an OM and needs an adapter to fit on my E-410, it ends up giving me a field of view equivalent to a 100mm lens because of the 2x crop-factor.]

The Noktor HyperPrime is designed for the Micro Four Thirds line (so sadness on my part). It's also got manual aperture and focus controls so the trigger-happy folks will really have to work at focusing their shots first, specially in low-light where this lens finds its home. Can you imagine the depth of field on this thing though? Wait, don't imagine. Check it out!

If only I had me one of these and a Micro Four Thirds body to go with it. At the moment though, it will cost you quite a pretty penny to own one. They're set to ship this April at $750 SRP a pop.

Hardware Update plus Store Review: Tay Hua Trading Corp

Well, this update is actually a couple of weeks old but might as well share it (as I have via plurk and facebook anyway).

:) I went and got myself a strobist umbrella set. Splurged on some upgrades and options as well.

1.) 6 foot stand --> 9 foot stand

2.) 36 inch shoot through umbrella --> 43 inches

3.) Swivel umbrella bracket.

+ PT-04 remote trigger set (had to get the PT-04 set as the other model didn't trigger my current flash for some reason).

I actually bought a couple of blowers as well while I was there (cheap at 150).

I'm loving it (or at least the fact that I own it hehe). Unfortunately for me, there were some considerations that I didn't, well, consider. :) The strobist kit picked a 6 foot stand for a reason: portability. The 9 foot stand is anything but. It gives a lot of height though, and I'm sure that I'll be needing it eventually (like for Christmas family photos and what not).

All purchases made from TayHua trading corp. For this rig, I actually went to the source in Binondo. It's not easy to go to, and particularly hard via public transpo I expect, but I wanted to know what else was to be had. The location isn't exactly like Hidalgo, where there are rows of other competitors vying for your attention and patronage. Not that there weren't any surrounding it, just not ones selling the same stuff. And while they have a sign, traffic that you might be moving with or vehicles parked in the vicinity might obscure the storefront. I recommend driving slowly, following the numbers on each store. Along Sto. Cristo street, it'll be on your right. You can park in front, though there's space for 1, maybe 2 (small) cars max.

There's a lot of stuff to buy, mind you, at reasonable prices too. Check out their online catalog by clicking the link above. If you want to be sure that there's stock before going there, best to contact Ackerly Chua via his email as linked. You can also call them at (632) 242-3152; 382-5211. But if Binondo is out of your way, you can always order online using their form, and pay via bank deposit or via G-cash. I actually tried the this for a spare battery they didn't have in stock at the time of my first visit. I ordered it last Thursday, paid for it yesterday (Friday) and I found it sitting on my bed as I got home today. You pay for the shipping of course, but it's worth its weight in not-having-to-brave-traffic-and-get-lost-in-Binondo-value.

Light-bending Techlust: Strobist Starving Student Kit (sortof)

Firstly, Happy New Year Everyone! :) In particular to my two followers.

I knows it's been awhile since I blogged about anything, and I apologize for that. As someone once said, "Life got in the way." Apologies aside, lets get back into the thick of things with a hodge-podge entry of sorts.

The holidays have come and gone, and I wasn't able to update my Christmas Wishlist. And, as expected, since it wasn't updated, none of my wishes were fulfilled (save by myself). It's not too late to add something to the list, is it?

If you've read any of the links that I've previously suggested, and if you're a fan and practitioner of off-camera lighting, you'd undoubtedly be familiar with Strobist.com. This sight is a tremendous resource for tips and tricks on off-camera lighting. While I don't pretend to be an expert, I imagine myself to be quite proficient with studio-based lights. However what this site challenges me to do and be is to master and be a master of such skills outside the studio.

To really get started as a true "Strobist", they recommend getting a Starving-Student Off Camera Light Kit. Everything inclusive of said kit found in that link, and sold at MPEX here. They supposedly ship all over the world too. That's a bit too pricey for me though. Lucky for me, and thanks to a family friend, I've found a local supplier who's pretty much going to be able to put together at the very least the skeleton of said kit at a more affordable price, without international shipping charges.

Tay Hua Trading Corp, located in Binondo, Manila, sells a lot of neat stuff. While Hidalgo might be the hub and go-to place for the bulk of the Metro's photography needs, it seems that his store hidden deeper in Manila is worth the visit. For one, they've got the beginnings of the SSOCL(fine, not the best acronym, but for now lets run with it)! Whats more, the sell loads of other stuff that you didn't know you needed until you saw them! And boy I need almost everything in this store.

But we're getting off topic. Primarily, for the early Birthday/Christmas-gift buyers of the future, I'd love to have a 2nd and 3rd one of these (as I fully intend to get the first on my own) plus flash and remote triggers if you'd be so generous.

Then I'm pretty sure we'll have the beginnings of another personal project (along the lines of going through Strobist.com's Lighting lessons / courses) that I promise (again) to see through to the end, if it ever does.

I will not claim to have been the first to discover this. I'm just glad I did. But before we go and drown in the cuteness of the contents of the blog in question, let me insert some photography-related nonsense...

Photo Essays. The term itself defines it. Basically an essay expressed with photos instead of words. A picture, after all, is worth a thousand words. Why not combine several thousand?

Ok. The writer in me is meandering again.

We were once assigned to create a photo essay for the photoclub back in high school. While my subject and storyline was a little more morbid than most (which, thinking back, probably alarmed a teacher or two), the objective was to tell a story with several photos. And that is what I did. Perhaps its time for me to do that once more. Why not?

But before we launch ourselves yet again into an ultimately unfinished personal project, lets get down to the blog that made this entry possible...

Bending Light 2: Spectralight Diffuser

It seems that this is one of those years that I'm going to fulfill some of my own wishes. :) First personal purchase off the wishlist was the Spirit pop-up flash diffuser. Works well within its limits I'd say. But for more creative lighting, and portable light bending, I had to go and get the Spectralight flash diffuser.

This was on the top of my wishlist. Primarily because it offers me a new way to use my hotshoe flash, within a respectable I-wouldn't-feel-guilty-for-purchasing-it-myself budget. :) tonight was the first night of use at a friend's birthday celebration. Supposedly, according to the site, this will allow the user a more versatile lighting experience, great for covering events and what not. :) Expect to see more of it in the coming flash-friendly events.

Inspiration: Make Pictures

While I haven't been posting any of my own creations, impressions or capturations (as I believe that photos are moments one captures and and rarely ever creates from scratch), I have, while reading strobist, stumbled upon a man who's photography fascinates me. His name is Clay Enos. The article in particular features a video of him doing street photography, rather using a portion of the street as his studio, and giving tips on how to do it. It doesn't involve all that much in the way of technology and equipment, and it seems like something I would love to try.

As a photographer I lean towards portraiture more than anything. I'll try to take a good photo of a particularly breathtaking landscape when I'm there, or cover a party or three to chronicle a happy experience, but given the choice I know I would take portraits ahead, above and beyond anything else. Street photography for me holds such an allure. The challenge of the venue, lighting au natural, and the excitement of meeting new people. One of these off days, I plan to and will do just that.

But going back to Enos. I checked out his blog entitled Making Pictures, as well as his official site (click his name) and his galleries. In a way, what this guy has accomplished, is something I would like to similarly be able to do. Adding his blog to the list of blogs I follow. :) Check them out. They just might inspire you.

Bending Light: Spirit Pop-up Flash Diffuser

My first encounter with the spirit was a fleeting one. I noticed it atop a Nikon D80 (I think) sitting on a table, presumably with its owner, at Krispy Kreme in Boni High Street. I was wondering what it was, what kind of diffusion it actually gives... then I turned into KK and forgot all about it.

I found it again online while browsing DPonline.com.ph for birthday gift ideas for my wishlist. And thanks to funds as a direct result of said birthday, I can now cross that off my list. Just to give you an idea what it looks like, here are some photos...

From where I'm sitting, it does its job, for the most part (notice the difference in the shadows), and gives a warmer light than the harsher naked pop-up flash does, which I for one like.

I haven't quite used it on anything other than itself (or rather the one I bought for a friend), and anyone other than myself. Soon however, I will post more, as I know the opportunity will present itself.

:) For those who don't know, I'll be turning another year older in about 48 hours. And while this blog is supposed to be dedicated to photography, my experience with it and passion for it, I think I'll cheat a bit and present to the reading public, you my dear friends who bother to visit every once in awhile, and to those who happen to stumble across my site while searching for God knows what, what I'd love to have for my birthday.

I know we're long past the age of being lucky enough to deserve things given to us... ok, fine. I am. :) I'm 1 year and 47 some hours shy of hitting the big three-zero. But the following are things that I'd love to have, things I'd wish for, things that I will attract to myself because, well, I want them. :) And in keeping with the theme, most of them will have something to do with photography. Most. Not all.

These are in random order. :)

1.) ~~Spectra Light Versitle Flash diffuser. This flash light bouncing system mounts to almost any hot shoe flash, allowing versatility in your lighting.~~ 09.06.09

5.) Ownuser Battery Grip for Olympus E410. This will help give my current cam a little bulk and vertical shooting grip.

First off, it's been forever since I last wrote in any of my blogs. Just a statement of fact. Now on to the main thought of this entry...

In my quest (albeit inconsistent and rambling) to better myself as a photographer, I have, on occasion, visited several sites to learn new concepts, study other people's photos and make my own little tools and things, like the light tent for example... I previously blogged about strobist and it being one of the sites I would love to make this blog like, a wellspring of info and learning. I recently stumbled onto a site which would also help give ideas and let one express their creativity for feedback.

Stumbled onto inspi.re via facebook. From what I can tell, its a community of photographers of different skill levels who group themselves according to their specific interests. There's a community strictly for black and white photography, DSLR users, Nature photography etc. What I like about it is that they require participation via voting and feedback for you to be able to submit any of your work in the contests. If you join any of the contests and win, you might win an actual prize, in addition to the adoration and appreciation as well as feedback from strangers who share your passion for photography.

Hoping to join a competition soon, though I'll probably join in the next cycle. The deadline for this last cycle is tomorrow. Up for grabs is Lensbaby's Composer.

Introspection: a DSLR does not a Photographer Make

As most of you know, I am an Olympus user. I love the format, the colors, and the cameras that I've been lucky enough to have had the pleasure of using. That being said, I don't believe that I am what I am only because of the camera that I use.

Despite what I previously believed, and what I sometimes may feel because of equipment-envy, a Photographer is not his / her camera. When it comes to photography and the art of capturing the moment, one does not have to have the top of the line, full-frame, DSLR. What I've learned, after 10 plus years of taking photos, is that the sky is the limit when it comes to what a photographer can do with the equipment he / she has. Skill, art with the instrument is what will differentiate a photographer from a camera owner, however high tech his / her gear is. While everyone, given the correct financial breaks and availability of funds, can own the best camera on the market, not everyone who might own said camera will be able to utilize it quite so well, not at first anyway, not without practice. In short, do whatever you can with the gear you've got right now, and if you feel you've reached your boundaries and are ready to breach them, by all means, upgrade!

When it comes to getting the right camera, I don't think I'm an expert, though several friends and acquaintances often treat me like one. As far as I can tell, the best camera for you is something that fulfills the following requirements:

1. You can afford it. Very important factor. :) Why force something you can't afford?
2. You can see yourself using it. If you can't imagine yourself using the camera for what you need it to perform for, then maybe it may not be for you. Check it out at a shop, try it around the store. If it feels comfortable in your hands and fulfills your needs, then by all means consider it as a contender.
3. It will fit your needs. With the availability cheaper, high powered cameras and DSLRs now in the market, it's easy to fall prey to the Mighty Megapixel come-on. Unless you intend to display your photos on the billboards along EdSA, you may not always need a camera with the highest megapixel count, nor a camera with exchangeable lenses. If you are the type who wants a camera for its portability and for the purpose of capturing those precious moments, snap-shots if your everyday life, the type who likes taking nice photos and digital video besides, a lot of good point and shoot, prosumer cameras do just that.
4. The camera will allow you to grow as a photographer. This only makes sense if you imagine yourself doing more though. A lot of high-end point and shoot cameras allow you to fiddle around with the settings, from controling the shutter speed, changing the opening / aperture, as well as film speed. If you're fed-up with point and shoot short-comings though, DSLRs are the way to go. You might decide to read a few books, take a few classes or workshops to help you harness its full capabilities but they will be well worth it.

Just some thoughts. :) Don't take me too seriously on this. Try things out for yourselves. Read camera reviews, borrow from friends' cameras. Invest in it emotionally and rationally before you do so financially. And when you have it, don't ever stop taking pictures.

Prosumer Techlust: Olympus E-30

I recently stumbled upon this, Olympus' newest DSLR on my favorite source for photo info but found it uncharacteristically lacking. Search engine results and preliminary reviews almost make me want to take back what I said about the E-3. Almost... I'd probably still go for the E-3, however, I'm sure I'd also jump at the chance to hold / own / use the Olympus E-30.

Announced November of last year, one wonders where the E-30 fit in Olympus' scheme of things. Well, supposedly it is positioning itself between the rugged Professional E-3 and the less than pro E-520. It's not as rugged, nor weather sealed as the E-3 (which used magnesium alloy, versus the E-30's structural plastic), and weighs in just midway between the two models. Dimensions-wise however it shares the E-3's girth, if only to be slightly shorter by 10mm. Additionally a newly designed viewfinder [penta]prism makes it lighter than the pro, but at the same time gives it a better view than the 520.

The newest camera from Oly also bosts 12.3 megapixels of resolutional goodness. While this may potentially mean more noise, as more pixels would be crammed into the same size sensor space, Olympus promises that noise levels will be more like the previous generation of sensors thanks to better microlens and photo diode design.

Like the E-3, the E-30 possesses a rotating LCD display, however Olympus decided to give it a larger 2.7 inch screen. Like the E-30, it also uses an 11 point AF sysetm but throws in the Face Detection feature found in the E-520.

Aside from the above mentioned features, the E-30 posseses a digital leveling feature, which lets you know how much roll / pitch you've to fix to help level your camera. Helpful for people who'd like to get their horizons perfectly straight, but otherwise also perfectly superfluous, in my opinion anyway. :)

Ok. Totally non-photography related post. I just thought I'd take the time out to say that a year and a half (give or take a week) has passed since I started this blog. I hope that, in its own little way, it's been able to help those who've made its way here. I hope my intermittent nuggets of information mattered, in some little way to you, my dear readers.

I would've wanted to be more active in my blogging, but as it stands, it seems I have barely any time for it. So out the window goes all my resolutions and goals for the blog for the past year and a half... But as the birth of a new year looms ever closer, my passion for the blog will perhaps be reborn as well.

I don't want to make excuses but... I know life's been busy, and I've been preoccupied with living it, and for that, I apologize to you dear blog. I shall endeavor not to neglect you again. But perhaps not with the fervor I once believed I'd possibly have.

Starting today, once a week... perhaps once a month, at least, I shall write a new entry.

D-I-Y Product Photography: Light Tent Photos

As I was writing my previous entry about using available light for photography, I thought I'd blog about product photography using (sort of) available lighting as well. Now, I don't claim to be an expert in any of this. While I was fortunate to apprentice with Carlos Legaspi for a very short time, I still feel that I lack the equipment and experience to go into commercial photography and be successful at it like he is. However, I've made my attempts at such on a small scale by using materials available to one with a small budget.

I may not have the high-powered flash units, the sprawling studio, or the material that a successful commercial photography studio has, but I think that I've been able to come up with some fairly acceptable product shots using several PVC pipes, joints, stiff paper, white cloth and several fluorescent clip lamps (by acceptable I mean good enough to use on ebay or on multiply, and even for a certain stock photography site). All above mentioned equipment will help you build your own light tent!

There are a lot of D-I-Y light tent tutorials available on the net. Based on the product shot samples I saw and the availability of materials, I decided to go with building one using PVC. Instructions for this particular design available here. A flash tutorial is also available here.

The lights used in this particular set-up were halogen, though he also mentioned that he'd been using CFL bulbs as well. I've personally been using 40W CFL bulbs, 4 of them to be exact. It's helped me even out the lighting on several different products. However, while CFLs, or any other hot light (not strobes / flashes) for that matter, provide sufficient light for us to see clearly with, they might not exactly provide enough light to enable you to take your product shots with a hand-held camera. Or rather, you can, however it might require you to increase your ISO / ASA / film speed, and thus sacrificing the quality of the image. If you intend take better quality shots to show detail, you'll have to lower your film speed and shoot with a smaller opening (higher F number). This means slower shutter speeds for you, making this an impossible shot if you don't use a camera support. So, in short, get a tripod.

The following photos were taken using the light tent, a tripod, and the C-8080. I forget the exact settings, but the opening was at f 8.0, ISO at 50, and the shutter speed was damn slow. I used a remote to prevent my hand from blurring the photos.

The last 2 photos in this set are samples of products I shot for a little business my girlfriend and I had / have. It was early on in my light tenting and I was experimenting with some circular fluorescent bulbs as is obvious in the catchlight on the stone and on the ring.

Available Indoor Light and You

I don't pretend to be an expert when it comes to lighting. I have an idea what good lighting is like (portraiture) whether indoor or outdoor, though I can't say I'm able to achieve it with precision. Taking photos with available light, avoiding flashes and strobes, gives one's photos a different feeling, even letting a viewer feel as if he or she were truly there. Outdoor portraiture depends a lot on the sun as your major light source, and it's not something you can switch on, and off at will. Light modification outdoors takes a lot of creativity, and often other people besides yourself.

Lighting subjects indoors is another challenge altogether. Different indoor lighting fixtures give off different colors, not to mention different amounts of light. Depending on the situation, there are several things you might need to consider to adapt to said light, or in a different circumstance, you might consider having the light adapt to you.

If you're lucky enough to be able to shoot a subject in a room with available track lighting, and have the permission of the owner, you could manipulate said lights to provide you the illumination you need. Point high ceiling-mounted spot lights on the subject and go!

Then again, there are those lighting fixtures that might make good elements in the pictures themselves. Colorful hanging lamps or chandeliers might help provide the light you need and add a touch of interest to your end photo.

Keeping in mind that you'll be using artificial light sources, and different ones at that, you might consider changing your White Balance setting around to figure out what kind works best. More on that in another entry perhaps.

Personally, I would seriously consider investing in fast glass (lenses with big openings - f1.8 to 2 if possible) and / or a stable tripod. Depending on just how much available light there is, you might also consider telling the subject to be extra still.

I hope something made sense in this post. Hehehe. Will post pictures illustrating what I mean in future I hope. For now, however, I must switch off my lights and get some sleep.

Why Olympus?

I've been asked this question many times, by Nikon and Canon users mostly (as they make up majority of the camera-toting population of the country). I've owned 4 digital cameras in my time, the latter 3 being Olympus units. And each time I was readying myself to upgrade, a friend or a relative would ask me why I stick to the brand. I'm writing this entry basically to answer said question in case it is posed by anyone else who has yet to ask me and have not heard my long-winded answer.

So Why?

The short version: Basically coz I'm used to it. Basically. Yeah. That's about it.

Long version:

1) I like the 4/3rds standard. Olympus cameras use the 4/3rds standard, which, if you're not familiar with, is the same standard your monitor display uses. Shallow reason, fine. But I like the standard. I figure that you lose less detail in most photograph croppings compared to other brands. Canon and Nikon both use the 2/3rds standard, which is fine for your usual 4x6 prints, but you lose detail at both ends of the shot if cropping for 5x7 or even 8x10. It could be said that the reverse then is true for Olympus and 4R prints, particularly with top and bottom detail in landscape shots (sides on portraits) but who cares? Plus the 4/3rds standard helps to make the camera smaller than its 2/3rds counterparts, particularly true for the E-410 and E-420. I'm sure there are other arguments against the 4/3rds standard, specially locally, but who cares? :) I don't.

2) I like the feel. Mind you this is model-dependent, but I've been lucky enough to like the cameras I've owned in the past (with exception perhaps to the first digital camera I've ever owned, which wasn't Olympus - I liked it at the time, but digital wasn't cheap then - but a 1.3 megapixel Aiptek pencam with limited onboard memory with no flash or preview screen). Every button is placed logically, each function easily reached (specifically I'm describing the C-8080 WZ, though the C-5000 Z wasn't bad either). This can be said of any camera if you've lived with it long enough, but I liked this on the 8080 from the get go.

3) Storage: Truth be told, it wasn't exactly easy to find affordable XD cards locally when I first got the C-5000 Z. However, I was lucky enough to have been given a 256Mb card, which was a lot back then. Plus they've been getting cheaper and readily more available as time passes. Another thing I like about the C-8080 and all the E series cameras is their ability to use two storage media: XD and CF. This can come in handy in a pinch if you have the right memory cards.

4) Made for Digital lenses: That's one thing the Olympus - Zuiko partnership has over the others. Their lenses are made specifically for digital photography, and not just adapted from film. There's an advantage here that I've read before but can't put my finger on and expound on (if you happen to read this post and know what I'm talking about please feel free to comment so that I might, in future intigrate it into this post). That being said, Olympus lenses are a bit pricey. :) But then again good glass is always expensive.

5) For DSLRs, if you know where to look, who to trust and when to buy, these cameras are relatively cheap. :) But you get bang for the buck. I promise.

Sure. As a brand it's not quite so easily serviced (a point a buyer should consider always) as it's not quite officially an entity here like Canon is, but it won't stop Olympus loyalists around the country from patronizing the brand.

Baby Basket: Case Logic Digital Video Camera Bag available at Living Well Podium

I think most of you now know that I'm the proud owner of an E410 two lens kit. :) And it has dawned on me that I need a better carrying case.

Workhorse Upgrade: E-410

To those who know me and / or read this blog semi-regularly, you probably know that I've been using two very functional point and shoots for my personal photography. Those who've had a personal relationship with those cameras know that they've served me well and have provided many an entertaining moment (particularly with the video recording function hehe). However, after so many years of experiencing their limitations, I've decided to upgrade. To do so, I had to say goodbye to one of my cameras, to my Olympus C-8080 WZ.

I've said good bye to the 8080's amazing versatility, it's video recording capability, it's comfortable bulk and all-in-one lens (all-in-one kasi wala ka naman talagang choice. hehe). And I've finally said hello to my first DSLR, the olympus E-410. :)
It's smaller than the 8080, and doesn't have your standard camera grip, which has made it challenging to handle and stabilize. However, it is lighter, faster, and since it is a dslr, I can, theoreticially if I had the lenses to do so, switch between the lenses to suit the situation. At present however I only possess the dual-lens kit lenses, which offers coverage from 14mm to 150mm (equivalent to 28mm to 300mm on 35mm set-ups). They aren't the fastest lenses, but they do the job (so far). I haven't really been able to take them out to shoot as I only got the whole thing recently (2nd hand from its first owner and in extremely good condition).

I'm actually pretty excited. I'm looking forward to the 3 weddings I expect to be going to within the coming 3 months. We'll see what it can do as far as events are concerned. :)

Tech-lust: Olympus E520

Woohoo!! I mentioned this model in a previous entry about the E420. And it's finally arrived. Was it worth waiting for? Well, near as I can tell, it is.

Announced May 13, 2008, the E520 is Olympus' upper-entry level camera upgrade to the E510. The E520 sports similar features to its older counterpart, with nearly identical external features, even down to the measurements and weight. One of the few cosmetic differences one would notice between the two would be blue markings instead of green. Another would be a differently texutrized and finished command dial. However, one of the biggest differences between the E510 and E520 comes in a bigger 2.7 inch, 230,000 pixel LCD screen.

While both the E510 and E520 have the sensor-shift image stabilization feature, (a feature you won't find in their compact little brothers, the E410 and E420), other improvements you'll find in the later model are...

Contrast detect autofocus (with select lenses)
Face detection in live view mode
Auto Gradation (Dynamic Range enhancement)
Faster continuous shooting speeds (3.5 vs 3.0 fps)
Wireless flash control (Up to three groups)
Additional Image Stabilization mode for panning

While most of the features that the E520 possesses would be a considerable upgrade from the E410, or even from the E420 that it came out with, if you're able to do without the above mentioned new features, you'd probably be set with the E510. But then again, who wouldn't want additional Image Stabilization for panning, or wireless flash control? :)

Photography Paths (and some shameless plugging)

First of all, I've to apologize for the erratic nature of my blogging life. :) I haven't been really able to follow through with many or any of my personal projects, and I guess that's the price one pays for being dedicated to one's craft. Being a kiddie portrait photographer slash child entertainer isn't quite as easy as it sounds. It's fun though, to be sure. :) (If you happen to be reading this blog entry and are interested and the above job, you can check out the www.picturecompany.com.ph site).

If portrait photography and kids aren't your cup of tea, there's loads of other photography-avenues to travel. There's landscape photography, Product Photography, photo journalism, Events, and wedding photography among others (beyond this small list, I cannot think of any more, but that just goes to show what little I know, doesn't it?:p)

Of all of the above, aside from kiddie portrait photography, I could say I've had experience with products, some events and weddings. The first was when I had to take pictures of the items we sold when Neng and I had our jewelry business, as well as when I apprenticed at one Makati-based commercial photography studio. My events photography experience has been earned basically at work-related events and parties. My experience with photographing weddings is basically limited to the weddings of friends I've been invited to and have attended.

Personally, I've found that while product photography can be fun, in the way that I've been exposed to it, it can get a little tedious. I think I do good work however, with what little I've been able to do (look for tikanchay on multiply, or check out the albums in my multiply).
The events that I've been able to cover so far have been limited to company-held events, in the different places I've previously and am now working at. I've covered sports-fests, school assemblies and activities, office parties and the like. All of which have me in an environment and with people that and who are basically familiar to me. In being a wedding photographer however, it hasn't been quite as easy.
While I've been fortunate to know most people who were invited to one or two of the weddings I've attended, my comfort level as a wedding photographer slash guest hasn't been high in any of these occasions, which limits the opportunity for kodak moments that I allow myself to take advantage of. It takes a special kind of kapal to do that with so many strangers in front of so many other strangers, particularly if you happen to be the bride or groom's wedding guest too.

But anyway, that's just me. While I fumble around to find my identity and purpose as a photographer, I will continue to take kick-ass (and by this I mean adorable and memorable and priceless) photos as a kiddie portrait photographer at The Picture Company at Podium.

Discussing the Term: Maniniyot

I was recently introduced to this term by a co-worker who said she'd been called one by her friend when said friend learned that she is now a photographer at The Picture Company. Supposedly "maniniyot" is the tagalog / filipino word for "photographer".

Ok, first off, as far as the word goes, I'm not even sure if it's a real word. I can't begin to fathom what tagalog root-word could've birthed such a word (obvious from this reaction perhaps my revulsion to the term) if it is at all, in fact, tagalog. But language being such that it is, evolving I mean, I'm sure it was only a matter of time before we would invent such a word.
Spurred on by curiosity and annoyance, googling (also an invented word now that one thinks about it) the term pointed me to several websites and blogs having to do with photography, and to a youtube video entitled "Mr. Kodaker (Ang Maniniyot) - Max Surban - Karaoke". All said links, none of which providing definitions, only allusions, irked me a bit more. "Mr. Kodaker" or the term "kodakero" would make more sense as Kodak was one of the more popular brands of film back then, which gave birth to the term "kodakan" for a picture-taking session.

I can only assume that the root word of "Maniniyot" is, in actuality, the word "shoot". That's what photographers do, after all. They take pictures, they shoot their subjects with their cameras. However, I can't appreciate how it has evolved into said label for my profession. Personally, I would've preferred "Litratista" - yung kumukuha / gumagawa ba ng litrato.

Well hello world. Long time no blog. :)

I wish I could dazzle the world with amazing tales of my travels as of late, it being the summer months and all, however my current occupation is keeping me busy at the moment. I'd love to be able to travel and go on safaris and what not. Though the closest to a safari I might ever really get to go to would be in Zoobic.

I discovered something recently however. Or rather I remembered something. I once heard my mom's officemates talk about bird watching around the Ateneo Campus. I think there was even a bird-watching club of sorts there. Didn't give it much thought at the time. I really couldn't imagine myself running around campus with birding binoculars and camera in tow, waiting for the slightest sign of wild, feathered friends. Recently however, after my little adventure in Rizal park, having encountered the not-so-wild variety of resident birds and after reflecting on the birds I did see in captivity on a recent visit to the Arch of Avilon, the notion of active bird watching is starting to appeal to me.

One might expect to see either one of 2 types of "wild" fowl when living in the metropolis: the diminutive common-place brown maya, or the larger and more annoying pigeons (one word: poop). With the former getting not so common-place anymore (their numbers seem to be dwindling as of late) and the latter usually already belonging to domesticated flocks, one couldn't justify the purchase of birding binoculars to use on them.

However, armed with the knowledge that there are wild birds within my, er, reach (within the campuses of UP diliman and Ateneo de Manila University anyway), such a purchase could be and would be justifiable (so would good zoom lenses / add-ons for my camera!).

To date however, I don't recall having ever encountered anything wilder than a Maya when I was still studying at the AdMU. I think the only wild birds I've seen, in the wild, would be mostly sea birds. I remember having seen what I thought was a kingfisher while staying at Dive n Trek in Batangas, and I thought I saw an eagle or some similar bird of prey as well as wild crows when we went to Palawan. Here in Meycauayan though, I've seen several heron fly over head some eventful afternoons gone-by. Without birding binoculars however, I can't be sure about the eagle... but It really did look like one.

At any rate, by writing this article, I am challenging myself to yet another photography challenge: wildlife photography, specifically wild birds. Whether I'll ever have the equipment for such a challenge is beyond me. haha.

Travel Photography: Subic Sweet Water Accomodations

I just thought I'd share some photos I took of some of the accommodations available at Subic Sweet Water resort. Mind you, we didn't get to go around all the villas, just the two main buildings of the resort (hitherto fore called building A, which the building where the kitchen is located, and building B, which is newer and bigger - I think - than the previous). And even in those buildings, I just took photos of the living areas on the 2nd floors of both buildings. :) Just to give you an idea, basically, you'd be able to pretty much house at least 12 people in each of these rooms (16 in the bigger space in building B). We wanted to explore some more but the army soldiers occupying the rest of the resort were kinda intimidating.

Monuments: Jose Rizal at Rizal Park

One of my recent entries had to do with setting personal projects as far as photography is concerned. I talked about possibly going around town to take pictures of monuments and iconic places. The other morning I was able to do just that. Here are some photos I took of the Rizal Monument at Rizal park, the surrounding views and statues, as well as the people who frequent / visit the area.

I don't think I've ever actually been to Rizal park. Or at least, I don't ever remember having gone there, even when I was younger. Basically, the trip there was very much like my first time, if it wasn't in fact my first visit ever.

I decided to park in front of the Museo Pambata (if I'm not mistaken). From there, I walked to the masonic clock which is across the road from Jose Rizal himself. My first few photos show the KM 0 marker and the clock itself.

I don't know who decided to make Manila, or this point in Manila the basis for distance to and from almost any location in the Philippines, but the marker says it all I guess. KM 0. The Masonic clock was put there basically because Rizal was a Mason, and because it was the centennial at the time. If you care to read the plaque, here's a magnified version.

Before crossing the road however, this Caritela driver and his horse spotted me and offered to drive me around. I said no politely as I intended to cross to take photos of the monument, but maybe I ought to reserve that ride for another day.

Crossing took me a bit of time because I was patiently waiting for the lights to change. There was, after all, a designated pedestrian crossing crosswalk, sign and stoplight. I stood there for quite a long time, with a couple of other would-be-park visitors. It became evident that the lights wouldn't change even after pressing the goshdarn button, so eventually we all did some Jay-walking.

The above are pictures of the monument itself, as well as the honor guards watching over it.

Travel Photography: Subic Sweet Water Beach Resort

I've previously shared with you several instances of my travels around the Philippines. This is the latest in the series, I guess. Hahaha.

It's summer time, and what better place to go than the beach? Because of insistent public demand (well, more like glowing reviews from beach goers from certain forums), we decided to go to Subic Sweet Water Beach Resort. And I gotta say, this particular place is probably one of the best beaches I've been to lately, if not one of the best beaches I've been to period.

Don't let the name fool you though. It might be called a resort, but it's really not (well, technically it really is but...). I'd say, it's more of a haven actually. I home away from home, away from all the hustle and bustle and stress that the over-commercialized Subic Bay freeport area represents. It's fine and nearly white sand, it's breath-taking vistas, cool and surprisingly not so salty water (my personal estimation compared to some beaches I've been to, probably where it got its name), and gracious staff make the trip out of town well worth it.

I'm told that the resort was and pretty much is a private rest-house. Due to it's under-utilization, the owners have decided to share their bounty with the world at large, and what bounty they have! The sand, the surf, and that sunset...

If you're looking for a vacation somewhere quiet, and aim for the relaxation and lazy days that a cool breeze, fine sand and wonderful location could possibly afford, I'd say that Subic Sweet Water Beach Resort is the place for you.

Directions:

Get your butts to Subic. Either you take the more scenic route, via San Fernando and along the National Highway (you'll pass through San Fernando, Bacolor, Guaga, Lubao and Dinalupihan), or via the SCTEX (which by the time of this writing, has yet to open) which pretty much gets you to Subic quicker.
From Subic, follow the signs pointing to Ocean Adventure. This road will take you past the airport, FedEx, and lead you towards the Morong Gate. The drive towards the Morong Gate will see you passing a fire station to your right.
Exit Morong gate and drive straight through, following signs for Anvaya Cove. You will encounter a fork in the road, with the main road going up the mountain, and the road to Subic Sweet Water (and other small resorts) will be going down to your right. The Tarp they have at this juncture is torn so keep your eyes peeled. You'll pass a small church to your right, and come upon a gate with the Subic Sweet Water resort tarp. Enter the gate, drive straight through. There you are! :)

At certain points in the year, Marine turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach. If you do find a nest, please leave it alone! :)

Don't:

Don't leave your trash on the beach. The cove's pretty clean and I'm sure the resort owners as well as other beach-goers would appreciate that it stays that way.
Don't park under a coconut tree heavily laden with fruits! :) Don't tempt fate. If you do, don't say I didn't warn you.

Do:

Book in advance. I heard the place was fully booked for the weekends of March, though I'm not quite sure what the April schedule is like.
Try to go during a weekday and not on a weekend. If isolation and relaxation's your aim, weekday overnights are preferable. Let them know when you'll be arriving though so they can prepare for you properly.
Take the SCTEX to Subic (we weren't able to). It's new, and faster than the usual route. It officially opens for business this April.

Personal Project: Doing Charles Traub's To Do List

Just thought about this right now. I blogged about advice Charles Traub gave to aspiring young photographers the other night. Now I'm thinking of going down that list and "doing" them tasks one by one.

:) A challenge to myself! I've to be able to do it all within... 3 months? Is 3 months fair? Hmmm. Well, maybe not all. At least 50% of them. Haha. Actually understanding or interpreting the list and putting it into motion will be the bigger challenge I think. We'll see. I'm particularly interested in the one that says "Do fifty of them—you definitely will get a show." Hahahah. Maybe I'll combine that with "Do it big, if you can't, do it in red." Hmmmmmmm.

Hot Stuff: Hot Shoe

In a previous and unrelated post, I mentioned this handy little component of my current digital cameras. I actually considered this a requirement when I went shopping for both my digital cameras in the past. Why? Well, for a couple of reasons really, which really points to the main issue of the need for artificial light in everyday and almost every night photography.

So basically, a hot shoe on any camera allows the photographer to use additional artificial light sources because, hey, let's face it, the on-board flash can only do so much. :) Aside from being able to use an actual flash unit directly connected to the flash via the hot shoe, with the right accessories, you can also use other flash units (professional studio or otherwise) that are off the camera as well, giving you a wide range of possibilities lighting-wise.

While the presence or absence of the hot shoe does not necessarily measure a camera's worth or a camera's ability to produce the pictures that you'd want, the presence or absence basically tells you it's ability to access additional light options.

While I'm no expert at using a flash and the myriad of accessories you could possibly use with them (like a light dome, bounce cards, inflatable diffusers, etc., ~some of which are kinda worth bupkiss though), I've found that additional light is quite useful when covering events in dark places. It extends your camera's battery life too as you won't have to rely on it to power the on-board flash.

After visiting most of the churches on the list and saying our prayers, we ended up in the parking lot behind the CCP where we sought shade and relief, and ate lunch (and discovered that the CRV actually has a fold out table in back by default).

Advice for Young Photogs

Basically, the following is an abridged version of Charles Traub’s advice for young photographers , a list of “Dos” and Don’ts” taken from a book he co-edited, The Education of a Photographer.

Do something old in a new way.
Do something new in an old way.
Do something new in a new way. Whatever works, works.
Do it sharp—if you can’t, call it art.
Do fifty of them—you definitely will get a show.
Do it big—if you can’t do it big, do it red.

Hot and Heavy Techlust: Olympus E3

If money was no object, barring the option of buying multiple bodies, the Olympus loyalist in me would no doubt splurge on their 4-years-in-the-making, recently announced professional DSLR E-3 system.

Announced October of 2007, the E-3 shows just how much evolution Olympus' professional system can achieve. A marked improvement (heck, after 4 years, it had better be!) over their initial effort, the E-1, the Olympus E-3 possesses a new sensor. The E-3 carries a 4/3 high speed Live MOS sensor compared to the E-1's old 5MP CCD, making this pro kit the first to have Live-view function. This becomes particularly useful and handy when shooting via the fully articulated LCd display, which opens up and swivels around like those displays found in earlier Canon G point and shoot systems. With certain lenses, the E-3 is claimed to have the fastest autofocus available today, making full use of its all new 11 point auto focus system. It also sports a new and improved viewfinder, giving 100% coverage and 1.15x magnification. Another feature available to the E-3 is sensor shift stabilization, enabling it to use pretty much any 4/3 lens and not having to rely on lens-based stabilization solutions.

Aside from all of the above, what piqued my interest is it's magnesium alloy composition and weather proofing. Compared to its little brother, the E-510 which is encased in not-weather proof plastic, this makes the E-3 a truly rough and tumble unit. It can also remotely connect to up to 3 flashes at a time, without the need for any on-hotshoe hardware.

So yes, I want.

Applied Photography: Personal Projects

While most camera owners might busy themselves with their cameras only on certain occasions, like say at a party, or a gathering, or maybe an event, something that merit's documentation, others might use photography as a way to earn a living, often doing much of the same as previously mentioned but being paid to do so. Then there are others who make a living out of taking portraits that families might not ever be able to take on their own. Other people just use it to document their lives as it happens, as they travel or go somewhere new.

While all of these are quite valid, if you're the occasional shutterbug, you're likely not to explore other applications of your craft. :) So my proposal to others, as well as to myself, is to start some personal photography projects that explore other applications of photography you might currently feel, more or less, alienated from, or at least unfamiliar with. Some personal projects I've seen other people commit themselves to include taking a picture of the sky everyday for a year, or taking a self portrait daily for practically the rest of their lives. While I think the former has merit, I'm not crazy about the latter.

When I started this blog, I promised myself I'd take and post at least one photo a day. While I may be taking more photos than I'd normally be able to as it's part of my job description, I'm not at liberty to post them online (which means I'll be taking down some of the photos I did post in old entries). I think I'll be revisiting this project again soon.

However, I'm thinking of a new project for myself. I'm thinking of compiling / taking pictures of every local monument or significant landmark I've ever visited / seen. I'm thinking I could start in Metro Manila, and go around from there.

This project needs a little tweaking, to be sure. Any suggestions for this or any other project from anyone would be helpful.

Inventing a Better Light Bulb: The World's LATEST Smallest DSLR, the Olympus E-420

I recently wrote an entry about the Oly E-410 and mentioned that it was (and I actually think still is) the world's smallest DSLR. After one year (from the E-410's initial debut, not my entry) Olympus has seen fit to announce an upgrade. Say hello to the E-420.

Technically, as far as measurement specs go, all the cameras in the 400 line from Olympus fits the bill. They all measure the same, each measuring 130 x 91 x 53 mm (5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1 in) however the E-420 weighs in slightly heavier than its predecessor at 440grams, battery included compared to the 435grams that the E-410 weighs in at. While it might not exactly win the world's smallest title from it's older brother, it does have several points over the 410.

For starters, the E-420 possesses a bigger LCD which also incorporates hypercrystal II technology, allowing for a greater angle (176 degrees) of view in more lighting conditions than before. As far as early reviews / articles go, it would also seem that the 420 is capable of quicker autofocus while on live-view mode compared to all the Oly DSLRs that had the same function before now. Added to that their incorporation of new face-detection technology which will make this camera more idiot-proof than before (pardon my French). As a little highlight, another difference would be the "Fn" label to the four-way navigation button's left button.

In conjunction with with Olympus' announcement that the 420 is the world's smallest digital SLR, they're also announcing a new Zuiko digital lens, the ultra compact Zuiko 25mm f2.8 digital specific lens. If you equip your E-420 (or the 410 for that matter) with this 0.9 inch thick wonder, you'd really be sporting the smallest DSLR.

While this recent announcement technically makes this the newest SLR from Olympus, it doesn't automatically make it a cheap camera. Without a lens, the E-420 will cost you a little under $500. However, with the recent announcement, it would seem that prices for the older models are dropping (as is with any advancement) so if you're looking to get a small DSLR and won't mind craning your neck just a little bit more, or the slower autofocus function in live-mode, and the lack of face detection technology (you've got eyes to detect faces on your own, don't you?), then the E-410 might still be a viable option. You might want to splurge on the 25mm Zuiko lens when it comes out at the corner store near you though. :)

I think I'll wait til they come out with an E-520. Hahaha.

Tiny Techlust: The Smallest DSLR, Olympus E-410

Ok. I'm in the market for a DSLR. I mean no offense to my point and shoots, but I'm starting to feel the desire to shoot a little faster, take more pictures with less delay as possible. That's one of the things I'm noticing with more intermediate point and shoot cameras. They may have nearly all the features of a true DSLR, the ability to use a hot shoe flash (hmmm... lets talk about that in a future entry...) but when it comes down to autofocusing and getting the shot, there's a little more lag than I'd like to have. So, within the budget I'm setting for myself (this doesn't mean I actually have said budget at the moment mind you), I've set my sights on a couple of choices, one of which was blogged in a previous entry, and the other in this one. So lets get to it.

I want an Olympus E-410.

Announced March 5, 2007, the Olympus E-410 was set to be one of the world's firsts. It was one of the world's first consumer DSLRs to carry the live-view function, allowing users to frame and take shots using their LCDs much like they would use a point and shoot camera. It was also one of the world's first smallest Digital Single Lens Reflex camera (the other one being the E-400, a 6 month old CCD-based iteration, and currently, well... later entries yes?). Measuring 130 x 91 x 53 mm ( or 5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1 in - body only), Olympus' 400-series cameras would be the most compact DSLRs on the market today, much smaller than any DSLR from either Canon or Nikon (or any other manufacturer for that matter).

Possessing an unorthodox and yet ergonomic grip, the E-410 weighs in at 435 grams including the battery, which makes for a comfortable afternoon / day snapping away. The only thing that will probably limit your shots would be the battery it uses, the BLS1, a battery designed for the 400 series. With a capacity of 1150 mAh, it won't give you the mileage that the BLM1 does (standard for all other E-series and some C-series cameras) but what it doesn't give you is added weight, which is basically the point.

Like all Olympus other E-series cameras, the E-410 uses a 4/3 type sensor, and therefor 4/3 type lenses. Kits come with either just the ZUIKO Digital 14 - 42 mm F3.5 - F5.6 lens or can be purchased with the ZUIKO Digital 40 - 150 mm F4.0 - F5.6 as well. To get an idea what that means in 35mm terms, multiply them by 2. Both lenses give you significant coverage from 28 to 300mm.

Tech-Lust: Olympus E510

While it might seem that I'm mouthing off like I'm a master of some high powered DSLR, I have yet to own one (emphasis on yet). Those of you who've read through past entries know that I have a compact digital (Olympus C-5000z) and large prosumer point-and-shoot (Olympus C-8080wz) as my tools. However, given half the chance, I'd gladly upgrade to almost any DSLR within my budget range.

One of those cameras I'm currently lusting after is (or was - by the time of this writing) one of Olympus' top of the line cameras: The Olympus E-510. Announced last year, March 5, 2007 to be exact, the Olympus E-510 came out as the 10 megapixel replacement for the Olympus E-500 Evolt (which sports an 8 MP sensor). It has all the functionalities of its predecessor, as well as some new functions also present in its little brother the E-410, which was announced on the same day.

One of the main features that the E-510 boasts of is its live-view functionality. In that respect, if you go through it chronologically, I think it's the third DSLR in the world to have the live-view function (2nd or third, seeing as the E-410 was announced at the same time, I think the line is blurred at best. The first camera to feature this function however was the Olympus E-330.). Equipped with a Live MOS sensor, the E-510 no longer confines you to composing your shots with the use of the viewfinder. You can now use the large LCD screen to compose your shots from angles that might otherwise not be accessible with your eyeball stuck to the rear of the camera.

Another feature the 510 has over its predecessor is built in image stabilization. This is good news for people (like myself) who may not always have a steady hand.

Program Mode: Why it's your best friend and other settings you'll meet in its company

While most of what I think I might be blogging about in this series of entries will be about how to utilize your DSLR, a lot of what I plan to go on about can also be found in some more prosumer-level point and shoot cameras (like those I actually own).

Take Program mode for example (accessible on SLRs and Prosumers by turning your mode dial to the "P" mode, or by going into menu and changing shooting modes - for some point and shoot compact cameras).

While most point and shoot users undoubtedly have used the full auto mode at one point or another, they might not realize that they have options for a greater range of control over their photography experience.

When one uses full auto in shooting, the photographer gives up all control to the camera's on-board computer, and will just use their camera to basically chronicle what's happening around them without giving a second thought to exposure settings, whether or not to use flash, etc... using the Program mode however allows the user to tweak the camera's settings to their liking (whether or not to use flash, what film speed / ISO to shoot at, white balance etc) at the same time not be burdened to think for the camera themselves. I mean you won't always want to use the flash when taking some candid photos of friends / individuals who prefer not to be noticed (ala paparazzi), or when you're taking photos of light sensitive subjects.

DSLR / SLR users on the other hand don't have the option to go full Auto. By default, the closest thing they'll get to utilizing their camera as a point and shoot is by using the Program mode, which isn't exactly all that bad an option really. I personally don't want to think too much about what shutter speed and opening I should use and how I should change them depending on changing light conditions when taking photos of a baby taking his first steps, or covering any other event where every occurrence won't ever have a repeat performance.

Basically, as I've experienced it and as I've stated before, Program mode allows the user to tweak camera settings to fit the situation without having to bear the burden of thinking for the camera when shooting.

Shooting in a light deprived environment with light sensitive subjects? Turn off your flash. Try increasing your ISO sensitivity. Current cameras are able to go all the way up to ISO 1600 or even 3200 without sacrificing too much in terms of picture quality and grain, whereas older models and even film cameras could only go as far as ISO 400 without having to resort to more expensive specialty films.
Are you shooting in a brightly artificially lit area but find that your subjects skin tone is an unhealthy shade of green? Try fiddling with your white balance settings. Auto White Balance (AWB) can only get you so far. Sometimes it's better to set your white balance to the appropriate lighting conditions to get best results. In the example I just mentioned, you might consider setting it to any of the fluorescent settings available in your camera. When adjusting your white balance, keep the lighting conditions and light sources in mind. Not all fluorescent bulbs are created equal, so check if your camera has the appropriate predetermined settings for the situation. If your pictures turn out to be a bit too orange, you might want to try switching your white balance to halogen / incandescent.

Like all things, it will be best to play around with your own camera and see how things work. Master what you have and you'll be surprised just what you'll be able to do with it.

"Lesson1" Know your Camera

I still can't get over how pretentious this all is. However, we've got to start somewhere. And this, my dear fellow photography enthusiasts, is where it should all begin.

While one can always get one's camera straight out of the box and try pointing it at anything at moves, clicking the shutter release and start taking pictures, such doesn't a good photographer make. First step should be to read the owners manual, as is with any sophisticated piece of equipment that anyone would dare to use. Getting to know your camera in this way allows for a more comprehensive understanding of what it can and can't do. At the very least, going through the owner's manual helps you differentiate between the myriad of buttons that any modern digital camera presents its owners with. Acquaint yourself with every button, lever, knob, wheel and switch your camera has so as not to lose yourself somewhere down the line.

You don't always have to read it from cover to cover though. I don't think anyone in their right mind could do so and come out an expert on their camera. But it really does help.

It's good to experiment with the actual unit while reading to really familiarize yourself with your newest toy and actually get an answer to the question "what does this button do?".

Read your user's manual yet? Know where all them buttons are? Go take some pictures and have fun for awhile. :)

Remembering, Reliving, Relearning: Just becase you're a professional doesn't mean you know it all

Like Socrates once said (though I know I might be paraphrasing), a wise man knows that he knows nothing.

Well, I don't think I'm too proud to admit it. :) There are times when I feel like I need to improve my work, look at more pictures, emulate greater / more skilled photographers to add to my own skill set. However, in my 14 or so years of "being a photographer", I'd like to think I've learned enough to get by.

I've been taking photos for roughly 14 or so years. I got my first camera when I was 13, back when I was still in 7th grade I think. It was one of those point and shoot deals which used 110 film (Does anyone remember what 110 film looks like? Do they still even make it?). Anyway, I took photos on a field trip we had to who knows where anymore... and in immortalizing those moments (albeit temporarily on 3R prints I've long since lost), I've been hooked ever since.

Photography isn't always just point and shoot though, as I would later learn, thanks to my first experience with SLRs and further exposure to photography through the Ateneo de Manila High School Photography Club (member from 1994 to 1998), being the first class photographer for class A'98, and in every short course / class and workshop I've taken since then.
There's a science behind drawing with light. Through controlling your camera's shutter speed and aperture, you're able to get different exposures and allow your photograph to exude different moods, you're able to adjust to shooting in different locations and the different lighting conditions present thereat.
There's also that sense of timing with regards to the actual shoot. It's not enough to know how to do it, you also have to have an idea when exactly to do it. While you might be able to browse books and get teachers for the former, I believe one has to learn the latter for one's self.

I think that, over the years, I've learned some useful things about photography. And while more and more people are jumping into photography as a hobby more readily because of easily affordable and available Digital SLRs, not all of them are able to fully utilize these magnificent machines even for their simplest functions (those who know me and are guilty of this, well, thanks for the idea :P). Since I started this blog to share my work, my passion and what I've learned about photography, I think I'm going to come up with mini-tutorials / tips to get the ball rolling for those who find themselves with DSLRs and don't quite know what they're getting themselves into.

I haven't been blogging. :) and I apologize for that. What got me blogging this time? Well, for starters, someone just left an enthusiastic comment encouraging me to keep on keeping on (thanks Marj). That I hope to do in the near future. :)

The 2nd reason I think I'd like to make a blog entry is to share with the world a recent picture I took of another friends' baby. :)

I know I haven't been posting much lately. It's been a busy life. :) I'm not complaining... well, ok, some part of me is. :P But it's been a fun sort of busy. I think, as a photographer, I'm getting a bit better. Though I've still got room to improve. If only there wasn't so much to do though.

Anyways, Just wanted to share these two pictures of two establishments that have recently opened in our city of Meycauayan.

I think these two store names are good candidates for forwarding, don't you? :) Only in the Philippines. Really.

On your way home, if your SO texts "WR Na U?", you could say "D2 na me sa D2NaMe" and buy them lugaw, or...

... you could buy them ukay-ukay clothes. Imagine, being here allows you to step forward in time... It hasn't been established yet!

Only time will tell if either of these establishments will make it into the history books as successful, but for the moment they'll spend some time in the limelight for such an inventive name. Pinoy talaga.

Being Professional A Month Later...

It's been a month since my last post. Gotta say that the excitement hasn't really worn off yet. I don't know if it ever will. I wish I could post some of the pictures I've taken lately. Soon I shall. I might be able to post one quite soon as I was able to shoot a friend's baby daughter this morning. Was she ever adorable. Though, like her mom said, medyo mahal yung ngiti nya. She only smiled maybe once or twice, and she hid her face whenever she did. :) I was able to catch one though. Enhanced the shot and her mom loved it. I'll ask them if I can post it here.

I'm learning new things everyday... well, ok, not everyday but I'm learning new things. And I'm having fun. While working with clients who are at first strangers to me might be daunting at times, and I think I've had my share of clients who've made me nervous, I think I've been lucky enough to be able to really establish rapport with most of them and have fun with them during their shoots. But I really need to pay more attention to detail. I am getting into a rhythm, and I hope that, no scratch that. I KNOW that in time I can be the best I can be.

Photography as a Job: A TPC photographer at last!

Ok, I have to apologize for several weeks, if not a month of absence. Training and working at The Picture Company hasn't always allowed me time to compose my thoughts. I haven't been able to post any photos of the day pictures either, and I apologize for that. Not that I haven't been able to take any good photos. Believe me, to my surprise and several clients' delight (relief on my part), I have. It's just that I don't think I ought to post them here without prior permission. But maybe, in the near future, I'll ask, and see if I can post some of them, at least small copies...

Anyway, updates. I've passed the three week training, and have been taking more and more photos of kids, grown-ups, families as the days have progressed. Tomorrow, being a Saturday, is going to be a heavy day for The Picture Company as weekends are when most families are free to visit the store. Saturdays and Sundays usually see fully booked stores, and this weekend is no exception. It's going to be all shoots from opening to closing. The prospect of which part of me revels in, while part of me is terrified by.
This nervousness is something that I verbally express at work, and experience whole-heartedly when I know I'm up for a shoot that day. I try to prepare myself, but I'm still a nervous wreck before, during, and sometimes after. I do my best, and that's all I can give. But there's still part of me that wants to be perfect for each client. Anyway, that's something for another blog or entry isn't it?

So far, it's been only 10 days since we ended training. And I know that I can see myself doing this for quite a long time. :) I'm a professional!!!:D

Now, if only money grew on trees.

I know I started this blog in the hopes that I might impart some knowledge about photography. :) Well, like a great philosopher once said, the first sign of wisdom is knowing that you don't know squat... or something like that.
Well, ok. I don't not know anything. I guess I know enough to take pics, though not always enough to know how to fix them, or take them well. However, the least I can do right now is point people to sites which I wish I had enough experience to have authored. One of those sites is Strobist.

Strobist is a site that's dedicated to helping you help yourself improve your flash using skills. I'm aiming to keep reading it and learning from it.

Photography as a Job: Joining The Picture Company

I haven't been blogging in awhile. I know I could come up with loads of good excuses but I just haven't been able to blog. Maybe I was busy doing something, or was too tired after a busy day and I've just neglected this. I hope not to again. Now that I've something worth blogging about, in a photo blog I mean.

So yes, like the subject line states, I'm applying for The Picture Company for their Kiddy Entertainer / Photographer position. Hours are a bit hectic, and the daily commute is going to be an issue, and sacrifices will be made, and difficulties will be had. But then, there are always going to be complaints, right? Whatever job I take. But maybe it's worth it, these sacrifices for this particular job which just puts two of the things I like together: I get to work with kids, make them laugh or smile and take their pictures! And get paid to do just that!
I'm in the 2nd day of the try out phase of the application. I'm still iffy on some things, and am leaning towards going part time instead of full time so I can still give some time to my other pursuits and commitments. We'll see as things progress. But I'm giddy at the thought of being a "professional". We'll see.

Anyway, I think I shall take this opportunity to commit to several things about this step into a life as a paid photographer. I've to take this blog and everything that I've started regarding photography seriously. So, in that light, I commit to the following:

I shall take at least one photo a day, of anyone, anything, anywhere at anytime for no reason, or any reason whatsoever.
... in line with number 1, I will blog at least 1 photo of the day, everyday. If I can't post it on the day I take it, I shall post it when I can, and it shall not count as a photo for that day.
I will treat my equipment with respect and not feel bad that they aren't this or that (in particular, not DSLRs). They are able to capture photos in the best way they can and are quite handy the way they are in fact. I will not feel equipment envy. I will use my gear to the best of their ability.
I will buy, within this year, The equivalent of the "Starving Student PC Kit" to help my personal portrait taking skills grow and to count myself as a "Strobist" (more of this in a separate link in the near future)...

Dinner at Uno Restaurant: Food Photography

I love food. Doesn't everyone? Well, most people I would imagine. I know a couple who photograph their meals before they eat them. At least they did that when I was on vacation with them. But food photography actually isn't all that simple. I discovered that much at a class I took via Jo Avila.

The basic food photography and food styling workshop was informative and fun. It was actually more food styling than photography, in terms of time spent doing what. It turns out that you don't actually cook the food all the way when you want to professionally take pictures of it. Everything is half-cooked. And man-handled and, in the end, inedible. But that's professional food photography. I won't pretend to be an expert at it, seeing as I lack the gear and the know how / practice as far as half-cooking anything on purpose. The closest I've come to food photography lately was at a birthday dinner for a friend at Uno Restaurant on a street perpendicular to Tomas Morato.

A note about Uno: This fancy place serves great food and sells incredible breads and cakes. They change their menu every so often so it's a good idea to come back several months after your first dining experience.
